Where can I find the Nucleo User Guide?
The Nucleo Pro User Guide is available as a PDF document and can be found in the downloadable installer file that contains the installer software. It can also be found on our website at Nucleo Pro 2 User Guide. |
What is the current release of Nucleo and how can I check my installed version?
The current releases of our software are Nucleo 1.0.11, Nucleo Pro 1.0.6 and Nucleo Pro 2.0.2. You can see the version of the plugin that is installed on your machine by looking at the About Nucleo menu item in the Nucleo status icon menu (in the Macintosh menu bar or a Windows tray icon). |
What hardware do I need to use Nucleo?
You will need a multi-core or multi-CPU system supported by your operating system. We recommend a minimum of 1 GB of RAM per core that is enabled for Nucleo. When working with HD footage or large and complex compositions we suggest increasing that to 2 GB of RAM per core. On a Windows system you may need to upgrade your operating system to take advantage of the extra memory. |
Does Nucleo work on a single core processor?
Nucleo Pro will load into After Effects to allow use of Spec Preview, Spec Render, Commit-to-Disk, Precomp Proxy and the Background Render Queue features. There will be no performance benefit but your workflow may be improved. Nucleo will not load into After Effects on a machine with a single core processor unless Hyper-threading is present and enabled. |
What are the differences between cores, CPUs and Intel's Hyper-threading?
From the viewpoint of Nucleo there is no difference between multiple CPUs and multi-core CPUs. If the Windows Task Manager or Macintosh Activity Monitor show more than one graph of CPU activity then you likely have multiple CPUs or cores in your machine. The exception to this is some Intel processors with the Hyper-threading feature. It may be present in addition to multiple CPUs or cores. Processors with Intel's Hyperthreading are supported but we recommend that the feature is disabled as it doesn't benefit Nucleo. Please see a reference such as Intel or AMD's website for a detailed explanation. |
How can I get Nucleo to use all the RAM in my machine if After Effects can't?
Although After Effects is a 32-bit application and is limited to the amount of memory that it can access (2 GB on 32-bit Windows, 3 GB on Mac OS X and 4 GB on 64-bit Windows) Nucleo uses several processes to render and preview. Each of these processes can access up to those limits. Provided the operating system can access more memory Nucleo will be able to use it. In the case of Windows we suggest using the 64-bit version if you need to access more than 4 GB of RAM. In a 32-bit Windows system PCI Express cards may prevent the access of a portion of the physical memory. See Microsoft's knowledgebase for articles refering to PCI express (ie. article 929605). |
What do you recommend for hardware?
We provide the trial versions of Nucleo and Nucleo Pro so that you can evaluate the benefits to performance and workflow on your hardware with typical project you work with. The only difference between the trial and the full version is the watermark that is applied to previews and renders. The functionality and behaviour will be the same as a licensed version of the software. |
Where can I get the trial version of Nucleo?
You can download a trial version of the Nucleo or Nucleo Pro software by creating an account at www.gridironsoftware.com/Register. You will then have access to download version of either plugin for both Windows and Macintosh. |
Where can I get the full version of Nucleo that I have licensed?
You can download your full version by logging in to your account at www.gridironsoftware.com/Login . Once logged in you will be taken to a page that lists all your licenses and has links to the downloads of the full software. Please read the notes on installing over a trial version. |
Why can't I find my licenses or software downloads when I log in to my account?
If you purchased Nucleo through a reseller the license is currently assigned to them. You can either ask them to provide you with the software download or we can reassign that information to your account. You will need to contact our support email address (support@gridironsoftware.com ) with your serial number/order number and account information to allow for reassigning the license. If another member of your company purchased the licenses the software will be assigned to their account. Either they will need to log in to download the software and retrieve the serial numbers or we can reassign them to another account. You will need to contact our support email address (support@gridironsoftware.com ) with your serial number/order number and account information to allow for reassigning the license. |
How do I correct errors when I install Nucleo on a Windows machine?
If you see an error message when trying to install on a Windows machine such as "The installer encountered an unexpected error installing this package." then check to see if any of these apply: - If you are connected to the machine through Remote Desktop you will need to install directly from the machine. - The "Data Execution Prevention" system on Windows can prevent the installation. This Microsoft article describes how to either disable this check or exempt the installer from the check: support.microsoft.com—875352 <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352> - If you run the installer from some network shared drives you may need to copy the installer to a local disk. - If you run the installer from within the downloaded ZIP file you may need to unzip the contents and run from there. |
How do I completely remove all elements of Nucleo from my Windows machine?
You will need to do the following to completely remove Nucleo or Nucleo Pro from your machine: - Go to the Windows control panel and use the "Add/Remove Software" or "Programs" control panel to uninstall Nucleo from the machine. - You can delete the following folders on Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GridIron Software\ C:\Documents and Settings\ - You can delete the following folders on Windows Vista: C:\ ProgramData\GridIron Software\NucleoPro\ C:\Users\ |
How do I install Nucleo in more than one version of After Effects?
Install Nucleo into one of your After Effects installations. Nucleo installs to the default After Effects 7 location and Nucleo Pro 2 installs to the default After Effects CS3 location unless the installer is told otherwise. Then copy the GridIron Nucleo folder from the chosen folder to the plug-in folder for the other version. When either version is started the plugin will be found (and will share the configuration information such as the render history). |
How do I upgrade my install of Nucleo to the current release?
On Windows you will need to uninstall the current release of Nucleo before installing the update. On a Macintosh you will need to trash the Nucleo plug-in folder before installing the update. In either case your configuration and render history will be retained, unless you choose to manually remove all the settings files. |
How do I install Nucleo in both Windows and Mac OS X or two different Windows versions on the same machine?
Download the installers for both platforms. Install and activate the plugin on one of the operating systems. Reboot the machine using Boot Camp to the other operating system. Install the plugin for the other operating system. Copy the license files from the activated system to the other system (both machines use the same hardware so the licenses will be valid). The license files are labelled NucleoLicense.p7s and NucleoLicense .txt (for Nucleo) and NucleoPro2License.p7s and NucleoPro2License.txt (for Nucleo Pro 2). On Macintosh the license files are found in: /Library/Preferences/GridIron Software/ On Windows XP the license files are found in: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\AppData\GridIron Software On Windows Vista the license files are found in: C:\ProgramData\GridIron Software\ |
Why did Nucleo create a CS3 folder in my Macintoshes Applications folder?
The default location for Nucleo Pro 2.0 to install is in the After Effects CS3 Plug-ins folder. If you have After Effects 7 instead of CS3 and did not change the installation location this folder is created. Look inside for the "Gridiron Nucleo" folder and move it to the After Effects 7 Plug-ins folder. |
Why did the installer give the error "Could not find After Effects Plug-ins folder" on Windows?
Your account doesn't have the permissions needed to read the registry entries that show the location of After Effects. Try installing using the same account that installed After Effects itself. Installing Nucleo on a machine with only After Effects CS3 or Nucleo Pro 2 on a machine with only After Effects 6.5. These are unsupported combinations and the installer can't find the location of a supported version of After Effects. |
Why can't I see the Activation menu item in the Nucleo menu?
The trial version of Nucleo cannot be activated and instead the full version of the software needs to be downloaded from your account. To check if the trial version of Nucleo is installed go to the Nucleo status icon, choose About Nucleo... and look to see if the word "Trial" appears after the version number. |
The full version of Nucleo will not add it's menu items to the Composition menu until activation is completed. |
Can I activate Nucleo if the machine isn't connected to the internet?
If your machine is on a separate network or a stand-alone machine you will need to provide us with the MAC Address of a network card in the system. Although the network card doesn't need to be physically connected to a network the card does need to be enabled. |
Just below the Activate menu item is an "HTTP Proxy" menu item. If your web browser uses an HTTP Proxy to connect to the Internet you will need to enter the correct settings in that dialog and enable the settings. Activation will then use those settings to connect to our activation server. You can check for proxy server settings by looking in your web browser's settings or your system's Internet control panel (Windows) or Network System Preferences (Macintosh). Ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or local network administrator for more details. |
How do I get my MAC address for my machine?
To find your MAC Address you will need to do the following: - Macintosh (it will look like '00:13:2A:5C:88:F1') : System Preferences > Network > Built-in Ethernet > (Advanced if it's Leopard) > Ethernet tab > Ethernet ID -Windows (it will look like '00-13-2A-5C-88-F1'): Control Panel > Network Connections double-click Local Area Connection (usually) > Support tab > Details Physical Address |
If there has been difficulty activating your system we may manually generate your license files and email them to you.
Here are the instructions to install them on your system:
Unzip the files Move the two files in the new folder to (create the GridIron folder if needed) - Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GridIron Software\ - You will also need to enable the Explorer to show hidden folders under 'Folder Options' - Macintosh: Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > GridIron Software - Afterwards restart After Effects and check that the Composition menu now has Nucleo/Nucleo Pro menu items. If the warning about not being activated still shows, make sure the folder that you moved the files to is accessible to all users on the system (check with Properties/Get Info on the folder)
We can permanently transfer your activation from one machine to another. You will need to do the following: Send us the serial number, the MAC Address of the old machine and the new machine. We will alter our activation record and then you will be able to activate with your serial number on your new system. You will then want to remove Nucleo from the old system. |
Each Nucleo license entitles you to run it on a single system. You are required to purchase more Nucleo licenses if you need to use the software on additional workstations.
You can't start the Nucleo status icon from the Finder. Start After Effects and look for the icon in the menu bar.

In that case just send the file without the project and we'll try an alternate transfer method. |
In the Background Render Queue you can select some or all of the history items and click the "Remove" button to clear them out. To select everything at once press Ctrl-A (Windows) or Cmd-A (Macintosh). If you don't see the History panel press the Show History button. Using the Nucleo Support Tool you can choose the Maintenance tab, check the "Render queue control files and history" checkbox and then click the Reset Settings button. This will permanently delete all of the Render Queue information.
Nucleo has a Cache Manager tool for viewing and managing the caches it creates for Spec Preview, Spec Render and Precomp Proxy jobs. To start the tool go to the Nucleo status icon > Window > Cache Manager. There you will be able to see the cache broken down by project and composition with disk space used and the date the files were last used. You can select an item and click the Delete Items button to regain disk space from projects that are no longer current. Using the Nucleo Support Tool you can choose the Maintenance tab, check the "Frame cache" checkbox and then click the Reset Settings button. This will permanently delete all of the Nucleo cache files.

What other troubleshooting steps can you recommend?
Try resetting the After Effects preferences back to their defaults. - Macintosh: To re-create the After Effects preferences file quit After Effects. Drag the Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs file from the Users/ - Windows: To re-create the After Effects preferences file quit After Effects. Rename the Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs.txt (for example, to Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs.old) in the C:\Users\ Quit from After Effects and temporarily move all 3rd party plug-ins from the After Effects Plug-ins folder to your desktop. Restart After Effects with just Nucleo available and see if After Effects can start properly. Try repeating your render again. If the render fails then there may be issues with access to footage or the codecs that are used. If it succeeds then there may be a plug-in that is causing the issue. Try restoring some of the plug-ins to isolate the effect that causes the problem. Restore all your 3rd party plug-ins after you are finished.
Try rendering other projects to see if the issue is isolated to the current project only or all projects.
Trapcode's licensing sometimes identifies the Nucleo processes as render farm processes - they have a 'Render Farm Registration' tool on their download page that often eliminates this problem. See the very bottom of www.trapcode.com—download.html. |
Some effects such as Zaxwerks Invigorator Pro may fail to render in some of the Nucleo processes. Zaxwerks is aware of the problem but we don't have a resolution date. |
What is a Tightly Coupled Effect?
Nucleo calls effects that rely on nearby frames for calculations "Tightly Coupled Effects". They need the results of the previous frame(s) to generate the current frame and this causes a bottleneck to rendering. See the KnownTightlyCoupledPlug-Ins.txt in the Nucleo plug-in folder for a list.
Keylight appears to use more memory or processor power and can overwhelm a system with many Nucleo processes. Try lowering the number of Nucleo processes in the Resource Settings window (found in the Nucleo status icon menu). Ensure that you have the latest supported version of Keylight for your system.
Magic Bullet Looks uses the video card's GPU to render. On a system with multiple Nucleo processes using Magic Bullet Looks to render frames the video card's memory can be exhausted. Try lowering the number of Nucleo processes in the Resource Settings window (found in the Nucleo status icon menu). Note however that Red Giant Software have indicated that multiple processes may not be as efficient as a single-process render with their plug-in. |
If Nucleo encounters a problem rendering the comp with it's own processes then it will send it back to After Effects to perform the job. If Nucleo's processes aren't able to access enough memory or there is a render error due to an effect or an expression this happen. Since After Effects' default settings has access to more memory the restarted render should complete. |
There is a small delay as copies of the project file are made and loaded into the Nucleo processes which would explain a short delay in the render starting. A project that takes a long time to open may delay this more than a small project. If there are any problems with the project or After Effects when the file is opened the render may be delayed or frozen. Examples include trial or unlicensed plug-ins that require you to click on a message as the file is first opened. Since the Nucleo processes aren't visible on the screen you aren't able to see or click on the same messages when Nucleo's render is started. Footage items that require you to provide access to use them (such as some asset management systems) can also prevent the project from fully opening. |
Why does the Background Render Queue indicate that the render is "complete" when nothing has happened?
If you are on a system where more than one user has used After Effects and Nucleo's Render Queue then the permissions on the folders that control the Background Render Queue may be incorrect. You will need to allow all users to access the contents of the shared settings so that you can read and write to those files. - Macintosh: Go to /Library/Application Support/GridIron Software Select that folder and choose File > Get Info Go to the Permissions section at the bottom Unlock the padlock and then change all the entries to "Read & Write" Click the "Apply to enclosed items" button (10.4) or menu item (10.5) - Windows XP Pro: Find the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GridIron Software Right-click on the folder and select "Properties" Click on the "Security" tab Click on the "Edit" button Select the "Users" group you belong to In the "Permissions for Users" check the "Allow" boxes for "Full Control" (it will check the other boxes) Click "OK" on this and the earlier window - Find the following folder on your system Windows Vista Business or Ultimate: C:\ ProgramData\GridIron Software\NucleoPro Windows XP Pro: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GridIron Software Right-click on the folder and select "Properties" Click on the "Security" tab Click on the "Edit" button Click "Continue" on the security window that appears (Vista) Select the "Users" group you belong to In the "Permissions for Users" check the "Allow" boxes for "Full Control" (it will check the other boxes) Click "OK" on this and the earlier window |
What 3rd-party applications does the Background Render Queue support?
The Background Render Queue can handle the following formats (in addition to After Effects render items): Maxon Cinema 4D 9.6, 10.0, 10.5 Autodesk 3D Studio Max 9 Autodesk Maya 8.5, 2008 Softimage XSI 6.0.1, 6.5 NewTek Lightwave 9.2 (9.3 Universal binary for Macintosh) Apple Shake 4.1 The render items are sent to the application responsible for rendering them. You will need to have the appropriate software installed on your machine to use this functionality (the Render Queue tool isn't able to render them by itself).
Nucleo may not be properly configured to know where the correct application is located on your system. You will need to use the Nucleo Support Tool to identify the location of the application so that renders can be started properly. After making the change you will need to restart After Effects. Start the Nucleo Support Tool (you'll find it in your Nucleo plug-in folder). Choose the "3D Renderers" tab. Nucleo will try to find any application that is set to "Discover" when After Effects starts by looking in default installation locations. If the application status is "missing" then the discovery failed. Change the "Executable" column to "Specify" for that application. On Windows you will need to find the following executable on your machine and paste or type the path into the "Path" box, including the executable itself. On Macintosh you will need to find the following executable on your machine. You will need to right- or Control-click on the application and select "Show Package Contents" to look inside. Once you've found the executable, drag it's icon onto the "Path" box in the Support Tool. - Maxon Cinema 4D Windows: c4d.exe Macintosh: Cinema4D.app/Contents/MacOS/CINEMA 4D - Autodesk 3D Studio Max 9 Windows: 3dsmaxcmd.exe - Autodesk Maya 8.5, 2008 Windows: render.exe Macintosh: Maya.app/Contents/bin/Render - Softimage XSI 6.0.1, 6.5 Windows: Application\bin\XSIBATCH.exe - NewTek Lightwave 9.2+ Windows: lwsn.exe Macintosh: ScreamerNet - Apple Shake 4.1 Macintosh: Shake.app/Contents/MacOS/shake |
Nucleo passes the render item to the appropriate application and it will render as it normally would. The intent of the Background Render Queue integration is to allow 3D items to be incorporated into your workflow but there will not be any change to the render speed. |
You can enable disk cache for your current project with the Composition > Nucleo Pro - Settings window. Check the box labelled "Enable cache file creation for Spec Preview" and click OK. You can enable disk cache for all projects you haven't opened yet by using the Nucleo Cache Manager. Go to the Nucleo status icon > Window > Cache Manager and choose the Cache Settings button. Check the "Enable cache file creation for Spec Preview" box and click Save. Projects that have already used the Spec Preview function will remember the cache status from before and will need to be enabled on a per-project basis.
There is an issue with Nucleo Pro on German language After Effects systems that prevents a Spec Render from completing properly. This will be resolved in an upcoming Nucleo Pro 2.0 update. |
The Proxy box beside the composition will appear if the composition is selected in the Project panel. The details pane will show the proxy information but this is not updated until you click in the panel. This appears to be a refresh issue with After Effects. |
Some OpenGL video cards are unable to work with multiple processes. Try setting the OpenGL preview settings below the composition preview from 'OpenGL - Always On' to 'Adaptive Resolution'.
Ensure that the camera settings are set to 'Active Camera'. That is the only view that After Effects allows for external previews such as Nucleo.
If you are using After Effects 6.5 or 7.0.0 and have guide layers in your composition it will not preview.
After Effects CS3 has altered the way it handles color management. See Adobe's support pages and look for article kb402801 for more details. Go to http://www.adobe.com/support and search for the article number.
Why does some of the footage items flicker or are replaced by the placeholder image when rendering Quicktime footage on Windows?
One of the Nucleo processes is having difficulty accessing the Quicktime footage. This may be resolved by enabling an After Effects project setting. With the project open choose File > Project Settings and check the "Match Legacy After Effects QuickTime Gamma Adjustments" box.
If you have the trial version of Nucleo installed the previewed or rendered output will have a watermark on it. The output will have a reddish color and a large red 'X' that forms an 'N' in the middle.
If the watermark does not look like this then it is the result of another effect that is having issues with Nucleo. Try to identify what effect it is and see the section of '3rd Party Effects' to see if there is a solution or contact Gridiron support.
If the network card in your system is disabled or removed after you start After Effects the renders on a licensed version of Nucleo will have the watermark applied. You will need to enable or replace the network card although the card doesn't need to be connected to a network cable.
On a Windows system with certain processors Microsoft’s Data Execution Prevention system can cause it to crash- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352.
See the section on "System-wide configuration of DEP" for simply disabling it or the section on "Per-program DEP configuration" to exempt a program. You will need to exempt both "afterfx.exe" and "afterfx.com" if you choose to do this.
If your Macintosh was recently upgraded to a new version of Mac OS or it was reinstalled and the "Archive and Install" method was chosen you will need to reinstall Nucleo from the installer disk image.
Check to see if you have Quicktime version 7.4 installed. If this is the case you will need to update to Quicktime 7.4.1 to resolve the issue.
Nucleo is unable to determine whether-or-not guide layers are enabled in After Effects 6.5 and 7.0.0. As a result the full composition is always rendered for previews. With After Effects 7.0.1 and CS3 this is not an issue. |
Nucleo is unable to determine the region selected and whether-or-not ROI is enabled. As a result the full composition is always rendered for previews. |
EPS and other vector images like Illustrator files are converted by After Effects into bitmaps when it render output. This conversion process slows down the initial rendering but doesn't prevent it. After Effects 7 on Macintosh has trouble sometimes when performing this conversion where multiple processes accessing the same footage sometimes fails. It isn't know if this has been resolved in After Effects CS3.
By looking at the Resource Settings window (found in the Nucleo status icon menu) you can see and adjust some basic Nucleo memory settings. The first entry shows the amount of memory that Nucleo will reserve for the operating system and other applications. If you need to run another memory intensive application such as Adobe Photoshop you should increase the value from the default of 512 MB.
The next entry shows the maximum number of processes Nucleo uses for rendering individual frames in a render or preview. At most this should be equal to the number of cores in your system but can be lowered to allow for other applications on the system to exclusively use processor cores.
The final entry shows the current value the Nucleo processes are using for their RAM Cache. This can't be adjusted manually. Each time that Nucleo loads the value will be calculated based on available memory.
By lowering the Memory & Cache preference for RAM Cache you can free up memory for Nucleo. After Effects uses the RAM Cache for both storing frames from your RAM Preview and for generating frames in an After Effects render. The RAM Cache isn't used when Nucleo is used for the render process. If you do not need to have large RAM Previews you can lower that preference setting, restart After Effects an check the Resource Settings to see if Nucleo's processes were able to get more memory. |
By adjusting the two values in the Nucleo Resource Settings dialog you can increase the memory available to the Nucleo processes.
By lowering the number of Nucleo processes the remaining processes can share the memory no longer used by the additional processes.
If the free RAM available to other processes increases the calculation Nucleo uses to determine the memory for the Nucleo processes lowers the amount of memory.
If Nucleo's performance level is set to Maximum the amount of memory that After Effects uses isn't included in the memory calculation that Nucleo performs. There are other considerations to making that change to Nucleo.
Nucleo performs a calculation when After Effects is started that takes into consideration the amount of memory that After Effects and the operating system are using. The remaining memory is divided evenly between the Nucleo processes. The Resource Settings dialog displays the value that Nucleo's processes use for their RAM Cache.
The calculation can be overridden with a fixed value by editing a text Nucleo configuration file. The value chosen will remain constant but you may need to experiment to find the best value for your system - you will need to balance the amount of memory used with the amount of physical RAM in the system.
Here are the instructions to make the change.
Quit After Effects Go to the following folder Macintosh: /Users/admin/Library/Preferences/GridIron/Nucleo/ Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\ Windows Vista: C:\Users\ Open the following file in Notepad/TextEdit: nucleo.cfg (for Nucleo) or NucleoPro2.cfg (for Nucleo Pro 2.0) Find the line that reads as follows: nucleo.cache.max.memory.setting=default Change the word 'default' to a number between 10 and 60 Save the file and quit Notepad/TextEdit Restart After Effects Check the Resource Settings to make sure it reads the value you set Try a render that has had problems to see if the change improves the result |
The After Effects preference setting for "Enable Disk Cache" (in the Memory & Cache preferences) allows for standard ("spacebar") previews to store images on disk that aren't able to be stored in memory. The Nucleo Preview functions all operate as RAM previews and will not be able to use that cache.
Nucleo has three seperate cache areas for each composition. They are used for the Spec Previews, Spec Renders and Precomp Proxy features. Each cache is specific to a composition in a project file and if the project or composition is renamed or moved they will need to be rebuilt.
The caches can be managed through the Nucleo Cache Manager tool which can be accessed through the Nucleo status icon > Window > Cache Manager menu item. See the user guide for further details.
Nucleo can be run in either Normal and Maximum Performance Levels. Nucleo defaults to Maximum as After Effects cannot be used while it's features are used. Nucleo Pro defaults to Normal to allow After Effects to be available as the Nucleo features are used.
When Nucleo is at the Normal performance level the Nucleo processes perform at a lower priority in the operating system allowing other applications to have priority when they need it. This includes the After Effects interface which is how you are able to work on a project while a Background Render or Spec Preview operation is happening.
When a render is started on a member of the render farm a standard single-process After Effects render will begin.
There is no means of starting a multi-process Nucleo/Nucleo Pro render and no way of managing which processes handle a specific portion of the workload in a render farm configuration.
